Work for Dharma Day
February 2007
Dear Sangha,
This year we will celebrate our fourth annual Work for Dharma Day on the first day of
Spring, March 21st. I love this initiative because it was conceived so that each
Sangha member, regardless of his or her financial resources, would have the
opportunity to make a contribution to the Village Zendo community by joining with the
efforts of many others.
We are very fortunate in having a beautiful zendo to sit in, a sangha to sit with, and
teachers who are uniquely qualified to share the dharma that has been handed down
from generation to generation. However, unlike Zen communities in rural areas, our
urban practice takes place in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Maintaining a practice space here, while ever more essential, has become
increasingly challenging.
Whether you are able to give $50 or $500, your donation is vital to the ongoing
strength of the Village Zendo. Participation is simple. You agree to earmark a
percentage of your earnings on March 21st as a donation to the Village Zendo. If
you are able to participate, please complete and return the pledge form so
that we can work together to keep Village Zendo thriving. Once you have pledged, mark your calendar, and then
send your donation in the enclosed envelope within 30 days of March 21.
It is critical that we remember that Village Zendo cannot support itself; it needs each
and every one of us. Approximately one-third of the revenues we need to continue
operations comes from initiatives like Work for Dharma Day, and if we don't take
care of our Zendo, it can't take care of us. And more importantly, it won't be there for
that person, who was once you or me, who is searching for a place to first learn to sit
zazen and hear the Buddhist teachings.
Thank you for your generosity, and I hope you are able to join me in this unified effort
of work and practice.
In deep gratitude,
Karen Shinko Harvey
