Dear Village Zendo Sangha,

Sitting with many of you at the Year-End Sesshin, I thought how fortunate we were to be able sit together, study with our teachers and penetrate so deeply into our practice. The opportunity is extraordinary, yet once we’re back in the midst of our daily lives, it is easy to forget all the effort that enables us to practice in this way.As I was leaving Wisdom House, I found myself vowing not to forget, and to remember how much I appreciate each of you and your commitment to your practice, to our community and to the Village Zendo.

Many of us don’t get to the zendo as often as we would like. However, when we are able to carve that time out, it is there for us - a sitting schedule, teachers, liturgy services for our loved ones who are ill, and a quiet space for us to practice.Ensuring the continuity of this vital support system, especially in New York, is expensive and requires both commitment and vision.

As most of you know, in the face of sharply increasing rents, and thanks to the efforts of our Board Chairman, Jane Smith, we have moved to a more affordable space in our current building. We have scaled back at this time in order to be poised to move ahead at another point in the future. Our vision is to ultimately own our own space in this city. We hope that you will share in that vision by renewing your commitment to taking care of the Village Zendo so that it will be there for you.

You can show your commitment by participating in Work for Dharma Day, a fundraising effort designed so that everyone can support the Zendo to the best of their ability. On this day, wherever, whatever we do for work, we agree to dedicate a percentage of the proceeds to the Village Zendo. In this way, Work for Dharma Day acknowledges that the future of the Dharma depends on us.

Participation is simple: you pledge to donate all or a percentage of income earned on Thursday, March 20, this year's Work for Dharma Day, to the Village Zendo. A pledge form and return envelope have been enclosed.Just fill out the form and mail it back to the Zendo by March 15.

Please give generously and ensure that this unique Buddhist community will grow and thrive in the years ahead.

With deep gratitude,

Karen Shinko Harvey
Member of the Board
