Ox Herding

Realizing the Path of Zen:
The Ox Herder's Journey

What is the Way? Is Zen similar or different to other Buddhist traditions? How do I know where I am in my practice? What do we mean by practice? Why practice?

In some respects, Zen discourages the very idea of an established path. And yet, as in all spiritual traditions, there are recognizable stages in a seeker’s journey. Each stage has its own challenges. The Ten Ox-Herding pictures are a graphic representation of the stages to self-realization in the Zen tradition. Used as a series of koans depicting the refinement of mind that happens with practice, they can help illuminate the path and encourage one in times of confusion.

A series of Study beginning Wednesday, June 4th, 2008, from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm with Barbara Joshin O’Hara, Sensei.

On the first Wednesday of each month, from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm, beginning June 4th, 2008, Sensei Joshin O’Hara will lead a class on a specific stage of the Ox-Herder’s journey. The class will be both informative and interactive and will be especially useful to beginning practitioners.
